FINE ART & DESIGN: We invite original, well-researched and previously unpublished reviews and essays on all genres of fine art, design and craft, including architecture the so-called vernacular forms. Critique through African eyes is the ideal. Art historians, fine art, design and craft lecturers/tutors, and practitioners of all cultural backgrounds are our preferred contributors, but we encourage very promising new writers (including students) to submit. Co-authored essays are welcome. Articles must be clearly written and relatively accessible.

LITERATURE/BOOKS: Original, previously unpublished literary reviews and essays on old and new writing by Africans, published anywhere. Prose, poetry, and plays are our preferred forms, but there is scope for other genres – the prospective conributor just has win us over. Established literature lecturers/tutors and professional writers (of all cultural backgrounds) are our preferred contibutors, but very promising new writers (including students) may submit copy. Co-authored essays are welcome. Articles must be clearly written and relatively accessible.

FILM: Original, previously unpublished reviews and essays on the burgeoning African film scene as well as historical antecedents are very welcome. Submissions by established film lecturers and practitioners (of all cultural backgrounds) are usually preferred, but very promising new writers (including students) may submit articles. Co-authored essays are welcome. Articles must be clearly written and relatively accessible.

MUSIC: Original, previously unpublished reviews and essays on all genres of music. The so-called traditional or ethnomusical forms must be accorded the same scholarly care and language as jazz and classical music, because they are foundational. The idea is to get rid of the old classifications. Submissions by established musicologists, lecturers and practitioners (of all cultural backgrounds) are usually prefered, but very promising new writers (including students) may submit articles. Co-authored essays are welcome. Articles must be clearly written and relatively accessible.

THEATRE & DANCE: Original, previously unpublished reviews and essays. THis section calls for radical critical analysis that elucidates the complexity of all forms, especially those hitherto called ‘tradition’, without making concessions to populism. Submissions by Theatre and Dance lecturers and practitioners (of all cultural backgrounds) are usually preferred, but very promising new writers (including students) may submit articles. Co-authored essays are welcome. Articles must be clearly written and relatively accessible.

CULTURE & SOCIETY: Original, previously unpublished reviews and essays. This is a broad-based section that include history, sociological processes and progressive anthropology. Contributors should be punchy and as opinionated as they wish. Cultural historians, lecturers, commentators and artists (of all cultural backgrounds) are usually preferred, but very promising new writers (including students) may submit articles. Co-authored essays are welcome. Articles must be clearly written and relatively accessible.

THE ENVIRONMENT: Original, previously unpublished essays. Contributors are usually established environmental scientists, activists and travel writers with (of all cultural backgrounds), but very promising new writers (including students) may submit articles. Co-authored essays are welcome. Articles must be clearly written and relatively accessible.

VIDEO PODCASTS: Very good quality interviews, reviews, exposes, reportage, etc. Use the submission form, making sure to enter Youtube or Vimeo link along with video caption in the body text field. Independent filmmakers, galleries and publishers are welcome to submit.

POETRY: We invite cutting edge poems. They are actually the backbone of our critical ecology. There is no age or geographical limit to submission. Up to six poems may be submitted at a time. We respect idiosyncracy, adventure and an unapologetic voice above all things.


ILLUSTRATIONS: We like all submitted articles to be accompanied by good quality photography, or drawings, in jpeg format, with appropriate titles, captions and copyright info/credits. However, this should not deter you from submitting articles.

SUBMISSION RULES: Unsolicited copy and proposals for articles are welcome. Please include samples of your writing and/or photography, published or unpublished. Academic essays are welcome, but without the conventional footnotes and appendixes. The editor and section editors are responsible for requesting review copies of books for the contributors.

COPYRIGHT: Unless expressly arranged, Antubam does not normally adopt the copyright of submitted work. However, it assumes first publishing rights on every material submitted, except those submitted by press and Public Relations officers and agents of show organisers.

REMUNERATION: Antubam is not in the position to pay fees for contributions at this stage; but we aim to monetize in due course, and be generous to all our contributors. Thank you for helping create this audacious and progressive forum for Africa.
